What is “Father of Lights”?

"Father of Lights" Director, Darren Wilson

“Father of Lights” Director, Darren Wilson

“We’re attempting to re-brand the Father,” commented filmmaker Darren Wilson of Wanderlust Productions on his most recently released film, “Father of Lights”

This film is an adventure. Rather, it is the conclusion of an adventure. Wilson’s trilogy, comprised of “Finger of God”, “Furious Love”, and “Father of Lights”, is one massive story of his journey of knowing God on a personal level.

In “Father of Lights”, Darren said that he wanted to explore God’s heart, discovering who He is and who He isn’t. Hence, the goal of rebranding the Father, or maybe a better way of putting it is, letting the Father rebrand Himself!

Movie Content

So, what exactly is “Father of Lights” even about? What all could this film about God possibly contain?

Well, how about THE IMPOSSIBLE for starters! Yes, Darren Wilson and his team filmed God doing the impossible. Indian MaharishiFather of Lights Israel Filming

  • People get physically healed
  • Gang leaders get saved
  • an Indian Maharishi encounters Jesus in a dream Loaves and Fishes, China
  • a Witchdoctor is overcome by the power and love of the Father
  • Muslim people experience the tangible love of Jesus
  • and much much more!

Wilson also interviews and features in the film well known people in the Christian community who share their insight, experiences and adventures with the Father as well. Among these are: Father of Lights Cast Lineup

For a more thorough review about the content of “Father of Lights” check out Christian Cinema’s review of the film.

“Father of Lights” is unlike any other Christian film, or any other film, period, you may have ever seen before. In fact, I’m not sure if I could even classify it as being in the same category or genre as any other Christian film. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

The best genre description for “Father of Lights” would be that it is a documentary… Kind of. It will be completely different from any other documentary you will have ever seen before. You will go across the country, across the world, into places of darkness, into places of light.

You will experience and witness God doing the impossible.

You will see the heart of the Father in action.

Cinematography & Production Quality

Indian Rock QuarryYou will also see an aesthetic masterpiece and an overall well-made film.

Wilson and his team have not just used their cameras to capture God’s powerful and miraculous love. They have created art via cameras and lenses; art depicting God’s majestic beauty, colorful creation, and essence of His creative being.

As an aspiring filmmaker, I am awestruck by the beauty of this film each time I watch it.

The funny thing is that Wilson never even had plans to make movies, much less documentaries! He originally had planned on being a screen writer. It wasn’t until after a season of writer’s block that God revealed to Darren that He wanted him to make movies. Not just any movies though… Movies about Him! Watch Darren’s full story of how Wanderlust Productions all got started.

And He, God Himself, is exactly what and Who you will see when you watch Father of Lights.
You see His love and beauty in every aspect of the production, especially in the l
ighting. The title of the film is “Father of LIGHTS. So, there’s lots of lights, light rays, bokeh, lens flares, etc. All of which are personal favorites and hold a dear spot in my creative heart as well!

The third installment of Wilson’s trilogy reveals the heart of God aesthetically just as much as it does through the film’s actual content.

As the film progresses, it’s amazing to see how Darren’s journey unfolds.

Darren narrates all of his films. He definitely has a gift for telling stories and captivating the audience. However, it is very evident through the story that begins to take shape throughout the film that the entire production process is all a working of the Father Himself.

As Darren travels around the world filming God doing these amazing things with amazing people, you begin to experience a more personal story that God is telling to you as the viewer.

The story is beautifully intricate yet incredibly simple: He loves you.

My Take on “Father of Lights”

“Father of Lights” radically changed my personal perspectives on a variety of things.

Father of Lights movie posterI’ve always appreciated film and video. I’ve always admired well-made movies and have always dreamed of creating my own one day. “Father of Lights” opened my eyes and my heart to a brand new method of creating film and video: creating, filming, and adventuring, with Father God.

“Father of Lights” isn’t a Sunday sermon, or a devotional study, or any other kind of Christian material you may have seen, read, or heard of before.

It is an adventure, and a personal one at that. The same journey that God took Darren Wilson on is the same one you get to experience for yourself through this movie.

When watching the film, you get to step into Darren’s shoes. And when you finally get your heels in all the way be prepared… Because your Father in Heaven is about to take you on the adventure of a lifetime.

Identity

This is the story of my friend, Landon. Feel free to watch this before you read, listen to it while you read, or watch it after you read about the incredible love that Father God has for us.

“Be still, and know that you are loved.”

On our knees The Father has constantly been reminding me of how much I am loved by Him. I can only imagine what it is like for a father to look at his son or his daughter and say: “Do you know how much I love you?” I feel like God delights even more in reminding us of how much we are loved by Him. Knowing that we are loved sons and daughters of Papa God is the basis of Christianity. It’s the origin of our very being. God is Love (1 John 4:16). The love of God is what we are meant to operate from. Operating apart from His love always results in meaningless acts of religion. It’s impossible for a Christian to love someone without first knowing, understanding, and resting in the fact that they are loved by God. The Father says in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God…” Lately, He’s spoken to me more directly and personally saying, “Be still, and know that you are loved.” When we are still and meditate on how much we are loved by Jesus, it refreshes our spirits. Gaining a better understanding of how much someone loves you is best accomplished by spending time with that person. This concept definitely applies for us and Jesus as well. Personally, I sometimes feel as if my sin and my failures deserve punishment. I feel like when I don’t live up to the standard that Jesus has set for me, I have to separate myself from Him or something. But, that kind of thinking is so twisted! Jesus continually meets me in the midst of my brokenness. I feel like He loves making us feel loved when we think we deserve His love the least. He reminds me that my sin has already been dealt with. His blood was shed. He died, and my sin died with Him. He rose from the dead, and He has raised me up from the deadness of my sin. He reminds me of these things in order to break the chains of sin and open up my heart to truth. In order to fully understand the love of God, we must open up our hearts to receive His love.

“You are my son. With you I am well pleased.”

The Father's Love The Kingdom of God is so amazing, especially the element of God’s Family. Once we are in Christ, we become a part of God’s family. Paul says that those who are led by the Holy Spirit are sons (and daughters) of God (Romans 8:14). He continues in the next verse saying that we who are in Christ have received the Spirit of sonship. By the Spirit we cry out “Abba”, Father, Daddy God. We have become His children. The Spirit enables us to walk and live in true sonship with the Father just as Jesus did on earth. “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6). How did Jesus walk? In the fullness of sonship. He walked and lived as the Son of God. When we are filled with Holy Spirit, we can also walk as sons and daughters of God just as Jesus did. Jesus never did anything on His own. He never spoke anything on His own. “Then you will know… that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me” (John 8:28). If Jesus learned from the Father, did what the Father told Him to do, said what the Father told Him to say, then we can do the same! Jesus is the perfect model of Christianity. Anything that Jesus did, we can do also, and even greater, because we are living in sonship with the Father just as He did (John 14:12).

“Be holy, because I am holy.”

Raised Hands As a whole, all of us humans naturally suck. We make mistakes. We fail at things. We even do bad things sometimes. We sin. It’s in our nature, and that nature is called “the flesh”. But “I have come that [you] may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Jesus has died. He took on the fullness of the God’s wrath towards the sin of humanity. He has made a way for us to have brand new life, the fullness of life!

  • “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight” (Ephesians 1:4).
  • “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Therefore, if we are in Christ Jesus, He has given us new life. He doesn’t even remember our sinful nature nor our sins anymore (Jeremiah 31:34). Basically, if Jesus has drawn you to Him and to the Father, and if the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, YOU’RE AWESOME! And if you haven’t encountered the Father yet, if you’ve been pushing Jesus away, or even if you don’t believe in God, YOU’RE STILL AWESOME! God loves you so much!!! Jesus says that God loves ALL of the world, every single person that has ever been born, God loves us all (John 3:16-17). Not only that, but God wants to show you the fullness of life and the fullness of His love and His power. He loves to make things new. So, if you know that you’re a son or daughter, I encourage you to continue to walk in your “new self”, your new identity in Jesus. And if you don’t know that you’re a son or a daughter, then I’m telling you now: You, my friend, are a son of God; you, my friend, are a daughter of God. He loves you. So much! He’s drawing you to Him. He desires to give you the Holy Spirit. He desires to have you call Him Abba, Daddy God. And ultimately, He desires to give you brand new life of living in right relationship with Him.

awkng.com

Site Audience & Purpose

Awakening is a Nashville based “worship movement awakening a generation to encounter the living God. Changing us to change our world” (awkng.com). Their website, awkng.com, is an encouraging blog site intended to encourage those who attend Awakening events as well as those who may be interested in the movement.

The majority of the people who attend Awakening or are a part of Awakening team are young adults ages 16 through 35. The content on the website will be read by young adult Christians in the same age range or even people who aren’t Christians but may be looking for truth.

The main purpose of Awakening’s website is to encourage people through blog posts written by members of the Awakening team. The site also serves to inform people about what Awakening is and how it all got started. There is also an option to donate to Awakening on the website, so that is another purpose the site serves. The written posts, however, are the main purpose of the site: to build people up and encourage them in love.

Blog Posting

Over the past three years, the posting on the site has been very irregular and has consisted of the following:

  • a few encouraging posts
  • information about supporting the team’s trip to England
  • a live video recording of part of one of the worship nights.

This year they have started posting more frequently with three posts in January and a post in February. Awakening definitely does not have a quota of posts to fulfill every year or every month. Instead the team simply posts whenever God lays something on their heart to share.

Not a Competition

If it’s not obvious from the irregularity of the posting, Awakening is not trying to compete with any other ministry site or worship movement. In fact, they actually support and encourage other local ministries in the Nashville and Murfreesboro areas as well as all over the nation and world. Some of these include:

  • Iris Nashville
  • Emanate at Grace Center
  • Slow Burn Church
  • Grace Church
  • The Experience Community Church
  • and many others.

Iris Nashville actually meets the day after the Awakening worship events in the exact same location at Christ Church on Old Hickory Boulevard.

The websites of these other ministries are set up differently from Awakening making awkng.com a unique site. They can build up, encourage, and love on people from all ministries and backgrounds and not deter or pull people away from where they may be plugged in at.

Awakening Readers

The writing tone that the Awakening team uses is an informal and friendly one. The style of each post is usually in the organization of:

  • a short introduction to the topic of the post
  • something God has been revealing to the author
  • an encouragement for the reader to live out the truths being shared in the post.

The style is appropriate for the purpose of the site. I plan on maintaining the same style and organization that the Awakening team already uses.

The readers of Awakening’s website need to know what Awakening is and how God is moving and working in the lives of the team. The site also needs to continue providing spiritual encouragement and insight for the readers and audience of the site. There doesn’t seem to be any specific obstacles standing in the way of getting this information across to the readers of the site.

When I write my article, I plan on writing in the same fashion as the team has written the rest of their posts. The ultimate goals of the site’s content is to encourage and love on people and to glorify God in the writing. This is what I plan to do as well.

Wanderlust Productions

Navigation

The main navigational menu of Wanderlust Productions’ website is located at the top right corner of the site page. It’s a smaller menu with five tabs (three of which have drop-down sub menus) and is easy to navigate through. Within the drop-down portions of the main menus’ tabs are appropriate subsections depending on the category of the tab. For example, under the “Movies” tab are links to each of the company’s individual sub-sites for their films, under the “Updates” tab are various news, blog, and video updates, along with press reviews, etc.

Screen Shot 2014-02-24 at 5.09.36 PM

Also featured on every page of the company’s website, is a vertical tab on the left side of the page labeled “Questions”. Here, anyone who is has any type of question for Wanderlust Productions can click on this tab and submit their question to be answered by the company. The only link that is not easily navigated to from the main page is the customer support page. The customer support page is actually a forum-like page with FAQ’s and additional customer support info. One suggestion I would make for a more viewer friendly navigation, is to implement a “Search” bar somewhere on every page in case a viewer wanted to find a specific page, article, or piece of information they had seen or read in the past.

Page Layouts

The main pages on the Wanderlust site are setup in a user-friendly style as are the individual sub-sites for each film. On the main pages of the website, the company’s name is located at the top left corner which provides a link back to the main page on every other page. The menus are also very visible and well placed on every page throughout the site. The use of pictures and graphics (especially on the main page) is very appealing. Each of the films has their own individual sub-site which are all laid out in a balanced and similar style. The entire site is unified and balanced but gives each of the films a unique graphic look and design for their sub-sites.

Consistency

The pages are consistent with the placement of the menu tabs as well as with colors, font types, and headers. The sub-sites for each of the films are very consistent as well. The menus on the film’s individual sites are consistent with the labeling of tabs and the placement at the top of page as well.

Another consistency is found in the Wanderlust Productions “Store” page. A new menu is presented and remains constantly on the right side of the page throughout the entirety of the store. The store menu is simple and easy to navigate, and it doesn’t provide any way for you to get lost within an endless rabbit trails of pages. The main menu is always available on the top right of every page in the “Store” and the “Store” menu provides different methods of browsing and shopping (by project, by product type, and by category).

Tone and Voice

Since most of the updates and blog posts are written by Wanderlust’s founder Darren Wilson, most of the writings from the website are in his personal and friendly tone of voice. However, on the informational pages about the company as well as the itinerary page a more formal and corporate tone of voice is used. The difference in the tones is obvious and the tone of the informational, corporate voice may be slightly too formal in regards to the spirit of Darren Wilson and the company as a whole. In my opinion, the difference isn’t distracting or bothersome though.

On the page about the members of the team, a friendly tone of voice is used, similar to Darren’s, but I’m not entirely sure who the author of each bio is. This is definitely a very fitting tone of voice for Wanderlust, especially with this section of more personal information about each team member.

Writing Quality

As I mentioned, Darren Wilson writes in a very friendly and casual tone which is easy to read and comprehend. The writing on the site is free from any blatant errors and mistakes (I haven’t proofread the entire site, but I haven’t noticed any obvious errors while reading). Darren is a writer and a storyteller, so his writing is not only grammatically sound but is entertaining as well. The audience that is most likely reading anything from the Wanderlust site (fans of the films) will be captivated by Darren’s updates and blogs.

Wanderlust Productions’ films are all documentaries about God and Darren is the narrator and storyteller in all three. His writing style is identical to the way he narrates the films so the majority of the writing on the site is perfectly geared towards the target audience.

Site Organization

Wanderlust Productions provides an easy to navigate website loaded with entertaining updates and news, insightful background information on the company, in depth summaries and information on the films and future projects, quick ways to contact the company and ask questions, and fast and easy ways to buy any of their products. All of these features are organized in a simple and viewer friendly fashion with the help of the main menu, drop down menus, and a content focused page. There are no ads screaming at you from the sides of the screen or in between the messages of content. The site doesn’t give you the opportunity to get lost in myriad pages of endlessness. Also, the page options are all neatly organized by category via the tabs and drop downs in the main menu.

Back Pain: Gone In 60 Seconds

Way of Hope

The Way of Hope is an organization that provides food and shelter for homeless women and children in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Every day, local ministries and churches take turns letting the Way of Hope use their facilities overnight to provide the women and their kids a safe place to sleep.

Last August, I decided to volunteer at the Way of Hope for the first time and help as the “security team” with two of my friends one night. This particular story, however, begins that next morning whenever we woke up.

In the Morning

That entire morning, I just felt out of it. I felt like I was not really in control of anything I was doing. Almost as if I was simply going through a daily routine, or something of that nature, but this was definitely not my daily routine. I mean, I woke up at a homeless shelter and was about to eat breakfast with these women and children who I had never met before. Well, I fixed my breakfast, then I noticed Tarah. Tarah was one of the ladies who had stayed there that night, and she was sitting at a table by herself. Being in the unusual mindset I was in that morning, I just automatically walked over to her, without putting any thought into it, and asked to sit with her.

Love In Action

As I began to eat, we started chatting. She told me about how she had constant back pain and has had six surgeries due to some deteriorating discs in her back. My response was slightly off from what I would have normally expected from myself:

“Hey, can I pray for your back?”

She said that anything would help, so I put my hand on her back and started to pray. I thanked God for how much He loves Tarah and asked Him, in Jesus name, to just glorify Himself and demonstrate His love and power by creating new discs in her back and taking away all of her pain. When I finished praying over her, I looked up and, at first, saw tears in her eyes, then saw her open them up real wide.

Hope & Healing

“Your hand was on fire when you were praying…” she almost whispered, as she reached out to feel my hand which was back to normal temperature.

I knew immediately that God had just done something, and she confirmed it by telling me that there was no more pain in her back. She absolutely lost it at this point and was just crying. I lost it too, but I going crazy with joy! God had literally just healed this lady right before my eyes. I looked over at my friend Austin, both of us with gaping smiles on our faces, and I started running around praising Jesus for what He had just done. Tarah, full of tears and all kinds of emotions, said she needed a cigarette, so she walked towards the door and told everyone she walked past what had just happened to her.

Ever since that day, I have continued to help at the Way of Hope as much as I can and have seen God move in creative, new ways in many more people’s lives.
