Identity

This is the story of my friend, Landon. Feel free to watch this before you read, listen to it while you read, or watch it after you read about the incredible love that Father God has for us.

“Be still, and know that you are loved.”

On our knees The Father has constantly been reminding me of how much I am loved by Him. I can only imagine what it is like for a father to look at his son or his daughter and say: “Do you know how much I love you?” I feel like God delights even more in reminding us of how much we are loved by Him. Knowing that we are loved sons and daughters of Papa God is the basis of Christianity. It’s the origin of our very being. God is Love (1 John 4:16). The love of God is what we are meant to operate from. Operating apart from His love always results in meaningless acts of religion. It’s impossible for a Christian to love someone without first knowing, understanding, and resting in the fact that they are loved by God. The Father says in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God…” Lately, He’s spoken to me more directly and personally saying, “Be still, and know that you are loved.” When we are still and meditate on how much we are loved by Jesus, it refreshes our spirits. Gaining a better understanding of how much someone loves you is best accomplished by spending time with that person. This concept definitely applies for us and Jesus as well. Personally, I sometimes feel as if my sin and my failures deserve punishment. I feel like when I don’t live up to the standard that Jesus has set for me, I have to separate myself from Him or something. But, that kind of thinking is so twisted! Jesus continually meets me in the midst of my brokenness. I feel like He loves making us feel loved when we think we deserve His love the least. He reminds me that my sin has already been dealt with. His blood was shed. He died, and my sin died with Him. He rose from the dead, and He has raised me up from the deadness of my sin. He reminds me of these things in order to break the chains of sin and open up my heart to truth. In order to fully understand the love of God, we must open up our hearts to receive His love.

“You are my son. With you I am well pleased.”

The Father's Love The Kingdom of God is so amazing, especially the element of God’s Family. Once we are in Christ, we become a part of God’s family. Paul says that those who are led by the Holy Spirit are sons (and daughters) of God (Romans 8:14). He continues in the next verse saying that we who are in Christ have received the Spirit of sonship. By the Spirit we cry out “Abba”, Father, Daddy God. We have become His children. The Spirit enables us to walk and live in true sonship with the Father just as Jesus did on earth. “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6). How did Jesus walk? In the fullness of sonship. He walked and lived as the Son of God. When we are filled with Holy Spirit, we can also walk as sons and daughters of God just as Jesus did. Jesus never did anything on His own. He never spoke anything on His own. “Then you will know… that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me” (John 8:28). If Jesus learned from the Father, did what the Father told Him to do, said what the Father told Him to say, then we can do the same! Jesus is the perfect model of Christianity. Anything that Jesus did, we can do also, and even greater, because we are living in sonship with the Father just as He did (John 14:12).

“Be holy, because I am holy.”

Raised Hands As a whole, all of us humans naturally suck. We make mistakes. We fail at things. We even do bad things sometimes. We sin. It’s in our nature, and that nature is called “the flesh”. But “I have come that [you] may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Jesus has died. He took on the fullness of the God’s wrath towards the sin of humanity. He has made a way for us to have brand new life, the fullness of life!

  • “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight” (Ephesians 1:4).
  • “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Therefore, if we are in Christ Jesus, He has given us new life. He doesn’t even remember our sinful nature nor our sins anymore (Jeremiah 31:34). Basically, if Jesus has drawn you to Him and to the Father, and if the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, YOU’RE AWESOME! And if you haven’t encountered the Father yet, if you’ve been pushing Jesus away, or even if you don’t believe in God, YOU’RE STILL AWESOME! God loves you so much!!! Jesus says that God loves ALL of the world, every single person that has ever been born, God loves us all (John 3:16-17). Not only that, but God wants to show you the fullness of life and the fullness of His love and His power. He loves to make things new. So, if you know that you’re a son or daughter, I encourage you to continue to walk in your “new self”, your new identity in Jesus. And if you don’t know that you’re a son or a daughter, then I’m telling you now: You, my friend, are a son of God; you, my friend, are a daughter of God. He loves you. So much! He’s drawing you to Him. He desires to give you the Holy Spirit. He desires to have you call Him Abba, Daddy God. And ultimately, He desires to give you brand new life of living in right relationship with Him.
